What Are The Differences Between Yoga Types?

Think you've mastered how to practice Yoga? Think again! Like anything else in life, Yoga can take very long to master because there are so many different types of Yoga that it would take you more than a lifetime to learn them all. What are the differences between yoga types? Although when you take different classes you'll see that they might be very similar to each other because of the poses, there are many little differences between them because you'll see that some Yoga types are more gentle while other might be more powerful. The fact is, we were all born with different levels of energy and some of us might need to use a more powerful Yoga in order to reap the benefits. Since there are too many different styles we'll only look at a few of them and see what kind of differences there are.

Hatha

Like I mentioned, the list for Yoga styles is pretty long so we'll cover a few here and Hatha is the most general form of Yoga you will find. It's also the most popular one that most Americans are practicing these days. Why? Because it's slow paced, soft and provides a good introduction to the basics of Yoga poses. So anyone new to Yoga should start with this type of classes. Another type of Yoga that would fit this category would be the Integral Yoga.

Ashtanga

Also known as power Yoga, Ashtanga is probably the fastest paced Yoga style you can find. It's very intense and requires a lot of energy. The reason is because you need to complete a series of poses continuously. This can be physically demanding because not only do you have to change poses very often but you need to do that in a flowing motion in order to complete the exercise properly. Only once you feel ready to take on a challenge should you start practicing this.

Bikram

Another special style of Yoga, the Bikram is also known as hot Yoga and it's simply because this kind of Yoga requires you to sweat enormously. How? Simple by putting yourself in a room where the temperature is between 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This allows to loosen up your muscles and the sweat is considered to cleanse you. Be careful though if you suffer from breathing disorders, you should avoid this Yoga because it might actually stress you more when you start suffocating.

There are many online services to help you out with different Yoga types such as Ananda, Kripalu, Anusara, Kali Ray Triyoga and the list goes on. The difference is what type of Yoga you are looking for. Some centers or schools will be more specialized in certain aspect of the Yoga such as the poses, the breathing or even the focus. It's really up to you to see which style you are looking for. For example if you were looking for Hatha Yoga, the search would be pretty easy since it's a general course offered in various centers but classes such as Svaroopa might require more time to find since they are more specific.

As I mentioned earlier, these are only a few of the many available style that Yoga has to offer. You can see that these three Yoga types have very distinguished characteristics and the same applies for every other styles so mastering everything about Yoga is pretty much impossible. However the goal is not to master Yoga but find one style that interests you and learn as much as possible to become good at it. Yoga is about making you feel better mentally and physically through different exercises, not becoming the best by learning everything. So give it a try, after trying out different Yoga types you'll know which one suits you best.
